Some church historians believe that the timing of the Word of Wisdom revelation is interesting in its historical context because at the time there was a great Temperance Movement in America.

Given that we now know there are medical benefits to drinking moderate amounts of coffee and even red wine shouldn't the Church revisit this issue ? Especially in light of the fact that caffeinated sodas or other cold beverages are not specifically prohibited by the Church. Does God really care what temperature my caffeine is ?

I remember when I attended Seminary class in high school (and I graduated, all 4 years) that we were taught that Jesus turned the water into grape juice, not wine. I heard this not from not just one teacher, so it must have been some kind of Church culture based myth or explanation. Why make up stupid crap like this ? The new testament says WINE not GRAPE JUICE ! It was a wedding, and they drank alcohol. Not to mention the fact that alcohol content in wine back then was probably higher. This is just another reason to take anything you learn in Church with a grain of salt. If Jesus could have a little wine, why can't we ?

So is your argument that a commandment must be unnecessary or wrong if a scientist says so?
I'm saying the church has changed before when society has changed, why not for this ? Explain to me why I can drink a coke and not an iced coffee ? Because coffee is not good for you ? Then what about all the fat and unhealthy members of the church who fill their stomachs with sugary and fatty foods ? Should we ban those too ? I can probably drink coffee every day for the rest of my life and be healthier then a person with an overeating habit.
I believe most things can be consumed in MODERATION, and that is the real issue. Rather then teach moderation, the church bans it, then instills fear and guilt upon the person as a form of control.
How is this fear and guilt made possible ? Because I cannot get a temple recommend to gain eternal salvation if I had a cup of coffee and was honest about it in a recommend interview.
A church creates another tool to give them power over people. Why would God care if I had a cup of coffee ? Wouldn't it be more important that I was a good person and served unselfishly my fellow man ?
You're right that an absolute ban on coffee and alcohol may seem unnecessary, although I think it's still more logical than God's ban on pork and shellfish. But I don't see this as a grand conspiracy to "control" people. I think church leaders genuinely believe people are better off without alcohol and coffee, which isn't a crazy assertion.
